Working in the outback!

I am 21 years old I am looking at experiencing and working in the Australian outback, but for a longer time, possibly living. I hear there is a way to work at jobs in rural places were they need people. Does anybody know more information about these kind of things? Thank you.

Hi Kayne,

I think you may be referring to the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme.

If an employer in rural Australia can show that he can't find a local person with the necessary qualifications, then he can sponsor someone from overseas.

All details here:

My husband and I worked (at fruit picking in NSW and Victoria) and did a seeding season on a 20,000 acre grain and sheep station in Western Australia a few years ago, driving big machinery. Sending CVs to employment agencies did NO GOOD - our ages were against us. But we found that if we went in to an agency in our clean farm working clothes they gave us the once over and immediately got on the phone and we had jobs almost immediately (whereas if we went in wearing street clothes we had no luck either.) We had farmed all our lives in New Zealand. The thing is to look the part as well as know how to work. But remember that it will be hard work and long hours - and an experience you will never forget!
