Australia Visa Application: Travel Visa - Online
Most tourists will only require a standard 3 months Australia Travel Visa (Electronic Travel Authority ETA). If you meet the requirements you can apply online.

Tip: If you are booking through a travel agency get them to organise your ETA for you ;-). Most airlines offer the same service.
If you want to stay for more than three months you can apply for an Australia Tourist Visa online here.
If you are granted an electronic visa you don't require a label in your passport. You will receive a written notification in the mail. Keep it for future reference as it also contains the conditions of your visa.
Australia Travel Visa - Paper Application Form
If your country is not on the list of ETA eligible countries you need to complete a paper application form.

Please note that every passport holder needs to complete a separate form.
Any applicable charges need to be paid as or before the application is lodged. You can lodge your application via mail or in person at your nearest Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.

Australia Visa Application: Work Visa - Online
If you checked the requirements and believe you are eligible you can apply for your Working Holiday Visa online. (Please note that you must not apply more than 12 months before your intended date of travel.)
If you are granted an electronic visa you don't require a label in your passport. You will receive a written notification in the mail. Keep it for future reference as it also contains the conditions of your visa.
When you arrive in Australia visit the nearest immigration department office to have the label placed in your passport. (You need it to prove to employers that you are indeed allowed to work in Australia.)
