A few nights in the outback

I'm really looking forward to traveling Oz. One of the main things I'm looking forward to is spending a few nights camping in the outback. Pitching a tent under the stars, getting up and get the stove out to cook breakfeast, get some photos during the day and making dinner on DIY stove. Maybe getting a camp fire going at night and get some music playing. Can this be done like it's in my head or should I pay for a trip to the outback?
